Two govts accept Veerappan's demands, Gopal to meet brigand againOur Correspondent in Madras R R Gopal, editor of Nakkeeran, will leave for the jungles - for the third time in a month -- on August 28 to meet the brigand Veerappan. He will be carrying the response of the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments to the dreaded dacoit. This decision was taken after the meeting between the chief ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, S M Krishna and M Karunanidhi respectively, on Friday morning in Madras. Both the state governments are ready to shell out Rs 5 crore each as demanded by Veerapan, and have also agreed to release the latter's colleagues from jail. The chief ministers have also promised to set up a 10 crore fund by contributing Rs 5 crores each, which will be used to compensate the villagers who suffered losses in operations against Veerappan by the police. The case involving some of Veerappan's colleagues is scheduled to come up in the TADA court on August 28 at Mysore, which is one reason for Gopal's delayed departure.
