Dalai Lama Is Hollywood-Bound

Harrison Ford, Goldie Hawn, Oprah Winfrey, Martin Scorsese and Richard Gere followed the Dalai Lama at his high-profile appearances in New York, Chicago and Bloomington, Indiana a few weeks ago.

Now the Dalai Lama is going West. He begins his five-day visit to Los Angeles on October 10 and will speak at several events about compassion, altruism and spiritual preparations for the new millennium. Some of the events are free, some cost as little as $ 10, and for one the highest ticket will be $ 1,500.

He is traveling to Los Angeles to open the World Sacred Music Festival, a series of 85 concerts between October 9-17.

The Dalai Lama initially inspired the event with his 1997 call to the world to consider using music, a universal tool of sacred expression, to usher in the new millennium, according to the Los Angeles Times. He will speak at the festival's kick-off event, a concert of about 600 performers at the Hollywood Bowl on October 10 starting at 4 pm. Tickets cost $ 10 to $ 1,500.

Organizers of the event say that doors generally open two hours in advance for all events; guests are asked to arrive early to clear security checks. Cameras, tape recorders, cellular telephones, or large purses and briefcases will not be allowed.

The Dalai Lama's three-day teach-in in Pasadena is sold out.

There are several other events organized in connection with the visit.

The Los Angeles Friends of Tibet will present a screening of In Search of Kundun, with Martin Scorsese, a documentary on the making of Scorsese's film about the Dalai Lama, at 4 pm and 8 pm on October 12 at Laemmle's Pasadena Playhouse 7 Cinemas, 667, E Colorado Blvd.
