Maneka, five MPs write to President supporting BJP

Maneka Gandhi, Satnam Singh Kainth and four Haryana Lok Dal-Rashtriya MPs have separately written to President K R Narayanan, informing him of their decision to extend unconditional support to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the formation of a new government at the Centre.

Copies of these letters were handed over to BJP prime ministerial candidate Atal Bihari Vajpayee by HLD chief Om Prakash Chauthala on Friday afternoon.

The Lok Dal letter is signed by the party's four newly elected MPs -- Kishen Singh Sangwan, Kailash Rani, Sushil Indore and Surendra Barwala.

Gandhi, who contested the election from Pilibhit as an Independent with BJP support, in her letter said she would extend unconditional support to the BJP in the formation of the new government, led by Vajpayee.

Kainth, who was elected from Punjab with the support of the Akali Dal, said he had also decided to support the BJP.

With this, the BJP claimed that it now enjoyed the support of 257 MPs.
