Inflation rose to 4.72 per cent during the week ended June 3 against 4.68 per cent in the previous week due to higher prices of fruits, vegetables and some manufactured products.

The inflation stood at 4.39 per cent during the corresponding week of the previous year. The official data on inflation released on Friday, did not factor in the increase in prices of petrol and diesel announced on June 5.

In fact, the index of fuel, power, light and lubricants remained unchanged.

The Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council Chairman C Rangarajan had said the total effect of rise in petroleum prices, including indirect cascading effect, could be up to 1 per cent on inflation.

He had expected inflation to be contained within 5 to 5.5 per cent this fiscal.

The routine weekly data came a day after the left allies of the ruling UPA rapped the government for rising prices of essential commodities.

Among essential commodities, prices of tea, fruits and vegetables rose by three per cent each, condiments, spices and milk by two per cent each, moong, bajra and maize by one per cent each.

However, prices of arhar fell by four per cent, masur and gram by two per cent and barley by one per cent.

Prices of sunflower and raw rubber rose by eight per cent each, soyabean by four per cent, rape and mustard seed by two per cent and copra one per cent.

However, the prices of linseed declined by two per cent and castor seed by one per cent.

Manufactured goods, which has a majority weight of 63.75 per cent in the wholesale prices index (base 1993-94) on which inflation data is based, rose by 0.1 per cent to 175.3 points.
