Apart from the nomenclature, this one will also be sharply different in spread. While Dilli Haat is a massive spread of small cottages and counters, the new set up will be a multi-storied building with 6,000 square metres of space.
Coming up at a cost of Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million), to be provided entirely by the Union government, this one too will be an exhibition venue for the handloom industry.
To be built at the site that currently houses the old cottage emporium building at Janpath, it will be a six-storied building.
The proposed project is being handled by the Central Public Works Division, who are presently doing the preliminary studies and working out the costs.
"The building will be a permanent gallery for the Handloom House brand, which will be allocated a fixed space. The rest of the space will be dedicated to weavers who will use it as a marketing outlet," Handloom Commissioner B.K. Sinha said.
"It is like the business model of the Dilli Haat, where artisans book space for a period of two or three weeks on a rotational basis to market their wares except this will be only for the handloom sector."
The proposed mega-facility will be able to house over a thousand weavers at any given point of time, claims Sinha. He further said that work on the facility would begin by the year end after the existing building at the present site is demolished.
"The cottage emporium building that used to exist at the site had shifted out and the building was lying vacant. Since, we had space available at such a prime location, the Textile Ministry decided to allocate it for the benefit of weavers," Sinha said.
When completed, this will be the first such facility for weavers though state-run emporiums are prevalent in major cities where handloom products are sold throughout the year.
