Americans may soon chew their food using 'Made in India' teeth crowns. A Nagpur-based firm, Ceramic Dental Labs, plans to export dental crowns to the US.

According to Bhaskar Savani, a dentist and owner of a chain of dental clinics in Philadelphia, the US dental industry is worth $8.5 billion per annum.

"Even if India captures one per cent of the total business in the US, it will generate a huge amount for the country," he said.

The Ceramic Dental Labs is owned by consulting dental surgeon and prosthodontist, Harish Rathi.

Rathi said that the idea of establishing the dental lab and training institute came after an informal meeting he had with Savani during his US visit last year.

Savani said people in the US were not interested in dentistry as a profession and Indians have a great opportunity there. Nagpur was ideal for setting up a ceramic lab as it would soon be on the world map owing to the proposed cargo hub project.

Moreover, the cost of operation in the country was much cheaper as compared to other places such as China or Malaysia, he added.

Savani said he had opened a dental lab in China about six months ago, which now has 600 technicians. "They are highly efficient workers with extraordinary artistic capacity in dentistry," he added.

The contribution from China was high but India could do better with the help of proper professional training and logistics systems, Savani said.

There is huge potential in India, but technicians here need more training, work discipline, and dedication, he added. Investment in infrastructural facilities would not cost much as labs here are equipped with almost all technical requirements.

Training and developing high work discipline would require more investment, said Savani.

Rathi said he would also be working towards establishing a dental school through which specialised training would be provided to dental technicians.
