A Chennai court on Tuesday placed DSQ Software Ltd and DSQ Biotech former head Dinesh Dalmia, who has been charged with misappropriating Rs 595-crore (Rs 5.95 billion) worth unlisted shares from investors, in Central Bureau of Investigation custody till Feb 24.

Dalmia, who was brought from Delhi in ChennaiĀ  was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate C Arulraj, who granted the CBI plea.

The court also directed that Dalmia be produced before it on February 24.

Earlier, the CBI had sought Dalmia's custody for a fortnight on the plea that the sum involved was large and its end use had to be found and also because Dalmia was connected with other cases. Dalmia's advocate, however, objected to grant of police custody.

Dalmia was arrested in Delhi on February 12.

Wanted since December 2003 when the Egmore ACMM had issued a Non-Bailable Warrant against him, Dalmia has been evading arrest for several years, having fled the country for the United States.

Dalmia, against whom a Red Corner notice has also been issued by Interpol, has been charged with forgery, cheating and criminal breach of trust for having masterminded a scam running into Rs 598.88 crore during the bull-run on the bourses in 2000-01.
