Indian IT heavyweights continued to drive growth in the industry, with the top 20 players accounting for 53 per cent of the $28.5 billion revenues in 2004-05, according to a survey.

The survey by IT publication 'Dataquest' also shows that the dominance of the top players would endure as their revenues showed an increase of more than 33 per cent clocked by the industry.

The newly-listed Tata Consultancy Services continued at the top position in 2004-05, increasing its gap ahead of Infosys and Wipro, thanks to the CMC subsidiary.

While the difference between TCS and the then number two (Wipro) was $230 million in 2003-04, the gap has now increased to over $630 million in 2004-05. Also, Infosys has inched up and replaced Wipro as the number two IT company in India.

However, if the combined revenues of BPO and IT are included, Wipro, with a total revenue of Rs 7,411 crore (Rs 74.11 billion), would edge out Infosys for the second position.

Despite the strong domestic market growth for the 'Top 20' companies, exports accounted for about 55 per cent of the total revenues.

In terms of the domestic market, BFSI, IT/Telecom, and manufacturing helped the domestic players post strong growth of 39 per cent, as against 19 per cent for 2003-04.

Exports for the Top 20 companies showed strong growth and grew at 43 per cent, up from 32 per cent.
