Bellary registers 69.8 per cent votingThe high-profile Bellary Lok Sabha constituency, from where Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj contested, registered an all-time high poll percentage of 69.8 in the first phase of elections yesterday. Out of the 1.21 million voters, 846,380 voters, including 401,031 women, cast their votes to decide the fate of the two leaders. A third candidate, political lightweight K Mahalingappa (Janata Dal-Secular), was also in the fray. The previous best polling in the constituency was recorded in 1967 when 67.5 per cent of the electorate had voted, with former Union minister V K R V Rao emerging victorious. The turnout was 62.61 per cent in the 1998 elections and 55.60 per cent in the 1996 polls. While the highest polling of 74.25 per cent was reported from Hadagali, the lowest polling of 61 per cent was in Bellary town. Poll percentage in other assembly segments were Siruguppa, 66.97, Kurugodu, 71.40, Sandur, 70.54, Kudligi, 71.90, Kottur, 72.63 and Harapanahalli, 72.74.
