Vinod Khanna injured in mob attack

Film star-turned-politician Vinod Khanna of the Bharatiya Janata Party and several others were injured when a group of persons, allegedly led by a Congress councillor, attacked them in Pathankot town late last night, the Gurdaspur police said today.

Jang Bahadur Jangi, a member of the Pathankot Municipal Council, has been arrested and 10 of his supporters, who are absconding, have been listed as accused in the first information report, Senior Superintendent of Police Varinder Kumar said.

Khanna, who is seeking re-election to the Lok Sabha as the BJP candidate in Gurdaspur, and his personal assistant Samrinder Sharma suffered minor injuries.

Sub-Inspector Surjit Singh, Constable Gurdev Singh and Khanna's driver Kishan were admitted to the civil hospital at Pathankot. Khanna's car was extensively damaged in the attack.

The group of more than 10 people allegedly stopped Khanna's car a short distance from the site of his rally in Ward 22, which Jangi represents, at about 2330 IST. After forcing Khanna, his PA and driver out, they began throwing stones, injuring the candidate and the others. The car was also damaged.

The policemen accompanying Khanna in an escort vehicle came under attack when they tried to intervene.
