Kith and kin make it to the Lok Sabha from MP

Several prominent leaders in Madhya Pradesh have found a place for themselves in the 13th Lok Sabha with kith and kin in tow.

Heading the list is Chief Minister Digvijay Singh's younger brother Laxman Singh who has been elected from the Rajgarh seat. BJP nominee and television star Nitish Bhardwaj, who put up a tough fight against Singh had to eventually taste defeat. Digvijay Singh has represented the seat twice earlier, in 1984 and 1991.

Speaker Sriniwas Tiwari's son Sunderlal Tiwari (Congress) wrested the Rewa seat for his party. In a keenly fought battle the BJP candidate was relegated to the third place. Earlier, in 1996, Sunderlal Tiwari had lost the Lok Sabha elections from this seat, after Sriniwas Tiwari had unsuccessfully contested from Rewa in 1991.

Eight years later, the son has fulfilled his father's dream by making his way to Parliament. Former chief minister Shyama Charan Shukla has made his maiden entry into the Lok Sabha from Mahasamund on a Congress ticket. This seat has traditionally been represented by his elder brother and former Union minister Vidya Charan Shukla who, despite representing the seat four times, was not given the party ticket this time.

Former Congress MP Vidyawati Chaturvedi's son and former minister Satyavrat Chaturvedi wrested the Khajuraho seat for the Congress after nearly a decade. Chaturvedi had been elected from Khajuraho in 1980 and 1984. Since 1989, however, the seat has been nursed by Union minister Uma Bharti who has been elected from Bhopal this time.

BJP veteran Vijayaraje Scindia's son and Congress general secretary Madhavrao Scindia won by a thumping margin of more than 200,000 votes from Guna. Scindia, who had made his debut from Guna in 1971, successfully contested from Gwalior in 1984. Thereafter he has been elected consecutively from this seat.

His mother had, however, been nursing the neighbouring Guna constituency. Scindia decided to contest this time from Guna after a span of several years after his mother decided to keep herself away from the electoral arena due to health reasons.

Former Union minister Arvind Netam's wife Chhabila Netam had to face a drubbing from the Kanker Reserved seat. Netam had been elected from the seat in 1996. State public minister Ravindra Choube's elder brother Pradeep Choube lost from Durg while former MP Nanalal Choudhary's daughter tasted defeat from Sagar as a Congress nominee.
