AGP will not join NDA

The Asom Gana Parishad on Monday ruled out joining the National Democratic Alliance.

AGP spokesman Nurul Hussain and publicity secretary Moidul Islam Bora said in Guwahati that the party would maintain its own regional identity at any cost.

The BJP wave was communal and it would simmer down soon, they said, adding that despite failing to secure any seat in the second successive Lok Sabha election, the AGP was not losing its mass base.

Because of the total polarisation of votes on religious lines, the BJP and the Congress had benefited. They dismissed the idea that someone should resign from the AGP leadership owning moral responsibility for the poll debacle.

The leaders hoped the results would not be the same in the assembly poll, due in May 2001. They admitted that in this Lok Sabha election, of the 126 assembly segments they took lead only in nine.

The party, however, took credit for the peaceful election in the state.
