25 MPs re-elected in MP, 7 defeated

Twenty five MPs from Madhya Pradesh have been re-elected, while seven parliamentarians were defeated this time.

Of the 32 MPs of the dissolved Lok Sabha in the arena, 22 were from the Bharatiya Janata Party and 10 from the Congress. Barring three, the others contested the election from their 1998 constituencies.

While Union Minister of State Uma Bharti contested from Bhopal instead of her traditional Khajuraho seat, Congress General Secretary Madhavrao Scindia tested his fortune from Guna instead of Gwalior. Similarly, Congress spokesman Ajit Jogi tried his luck from Shahdol. He had contested the last election from Raigarh.

Of the 22 BJP MPs who were renominated, 19 tasted success while six of the 10 Congress MPs were re-elected.

Prominent among the BJP leaders returned to Parliament are party general secretary Sumitra Mahajan (Indore), Union Labour Minister Satyanarayan Jatia (Ujjain), Union Minister of State for Steel and Mines Ramesh Bais (Raipur), Uma Bharti and former state party president Laxminarayn Pande (Mandsaur).

Among the victorious Congressmen were Scindia, former Union minister Kamal Nath (Chhindwara), Chief Minister Digvijay Singh's brother Laxman Singh (Rajgarh), former state minister Charan Das Mahant (Janjgir) and Gajendra Singh Rajukehdi (Dhar).

Congress members of the 12th House who had to face defeat were Jogi, former Union minister Vimala Verma (Seoni), former Uttar Pradesh governor Motilal Vora (Rajnandgaon) and former state party president Parsaram Bharadwaj (Sarangarh).

From the BJP side, Chandramani Tripathi (Rewa), Laran Sai (Sarguja) and Chandrashekhar Sahu (Mahasamund) were defeated.
