Rajnath Singh briefs Vajpayee, Thakre on UP

The Bharatiya Janata Party's Uttar Pradesh unit chief Rajnath Singh, today met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and party president Kushabhau Thakre and apprised them of the latest political situation in the crucial Hindi heartland state.

The BJP got a drubbing in Uttar Pradesh. It lost half of the 57 seats it had won in 1998 and the state leadership was finding itself in a difficult situation to explain the reasons for the debacle.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, who had last night owned responsibility for the party's poor show at the hustings, arrived in Delhi ostensibly to ''greet'' the senior party leaders over the victory of the National Democratic Alliance.

Rajnath Singh said his meeting with the senior party leaders was just a ''courtesy call'' and no political meaning should be read into it. He denied that there was any demand from any quarter of the party to remove Kalyan Singh from the chief minister's post.

He said the party's senior leaders would now sit down and analyse the results and plan its future strategy.
