TDP extends support to NDA

The Telugu Desam Party today decided to extend support to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance for the formation of a new government at the Centre.

The TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu in a letter to President K R Narayanan, faxed from Hyderabad, communicated his party's decision to extend support to the NDA led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The support of the TDP, which will have 29 members in the new Lok Sabha, to the NDA was also communicated separately to Vajpayee.

Earlier, the TDP politbureau, the highest decision making body of the party, met under the chairmanship of Chandrababu Naidu and decided to extend support to the NDA.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the TDP spokesman Dr Ummareddy Venkateswarlu said the TDP Legislature Party would meet on October 10 to formally elect its leader. The TDLP meeting will be followed by the TDP Parliamentary Party meeting.

The swearing-in of the new government will take place on October 11.
