Congress demands that Mahanta step downThe Assam Pradesh Congress Committee today demanded that the Prafulla Kumar Mahanta-led Assam Gana Parishad government should seek a fresh mandate as they had drawn a blank in two successive Lok Sabha elections. Talking to newsmen at the party headquarters in Guwahati, APCC president Tarun Gogoi stated that the AGP had no moral right to continue in power and should seek a fresh mandate. The people of the state had reposed their full confidence in the Congress in two Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand people through their verdict had totally rejected the incompetent, corrupt and insensitive AGP government, Gogoi said. The election has exposed the AGP's false, motivated and baseless allegations about the nexus between the Congress and the United Liberation Front of Assam, he said. The AGP, to cover up its failure and poor performance, has invented a new theory saying that it had lost the elections due to the communal polarisation of votes, he added. The chief minister had also insulted the secular people of Assam and the greater Assamese society built up by the great Vaishnava saint Shankardeva and Ajan Fakir, Gogoi alleged. Out of the 13 of the 14 parliamentary seats, the Congress has retained eight and wrested one from the BJP while they lost two seats to the BJP. The ruling AGP and its alliance partners -- the Communist Party of India-Marxist, the CPI and the United Peoples Party of Assam -- drew a blank. The election to the Dhubri parliamentary constituency was adjourned following the killing of the BJP candidate Dr Pannalal Oswal. Polling there will be held on October 28. UNI
