TDP gets majority on its own in AP

The Telugu Desam Party-Bharatiya Janata Party combine has bagged 136 of the 204 assembly seats, the results of which were declared so far.

The TDP has so far bagged 126 seats and is leading in 45 others, while the BJP emerged victorious in ten seats and is ahead in three others. Incidentally, the BJP, for the first time, reached the double digit figure in the state.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and most of his cabinet colleagues retained their seats. Naidu was re-elected from Kuppam by a handsome margin of over 65,000 votes.

The Congress which was hoping to wrest power from the TDP, could manage to win only 61 seats so far and was leading in 28 others. Many of the Congress stalwarts tasted defeat, with the biggest upset being the defeat of the Congress Legislature Party leader P Janardhana Reddy (Khairatabad) at the hands of political novice and former Central Bureau of Investigation director K Vijayarama Rao.

The other notable Congress losers included former Pradesh Congress Committee chiefs K Rosaiah, V Hanumantha Rao, CLP secretary M Kodanda Reddy, former ministers Rambhupal Chowdary, M Sasidhar Reddy, son of former chief minister M Channa Reddy, and P V Ranga Rao, son of former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao.

The NTR-TDP leader Laxmi Parvathi and Anna-TDP leader and son of late N T Rama Rao, N Harikrishna, were also trounced.

The Communist Party of India and the CPI-Marxist which together won 30 seats in alliance with the TDP in the last elections, were facing a near rout this time.

Chandrababu Naidu attributed the TDP's victory to the performance of his government and described the result as a historic verdict.

APCC president Y S Rajasekhar Reddy said the TDP-BJP alliance had helped in consolidating the anti-Congress votes.
