Congress wins 10 LS seats in Karnataka, set for more gainsCongress president Sonia Gandhi led the party's onslaught on the National Democratic Alliance in Karnataka with the party winning eight Lok Sabha seats and leading in eight others. Sonia herself won from Bellary, trouncing firebrand BJP leader Sushma Swaraj by 56,100 votes. The party wrested Belgaum, Mysore, Gulbarga and Shimoga from the BJP, while the BJP managed to retain Dharwad North and Chikmagalur. The Congress retained Bangalore North by a huge margin and was leading in Mandya, Chikaballapur, Raichur, Koppal, Kanara, Chitradurga, Mangalore, and Chamarajanagara (SC). Union Civil Aviation Minister Ananth Kumar was elected from Bangalore South, one of the three Lok Sabha constituencies in the state where electronic voting machines were used. Former Union minister C K Jaffer Sharief won Bangalore North by 230,000 votes. He defeated trade union leader Michael Fernandes of the Janata Dal (United). Iqbal Ahmed Sardagi (Congress) defeated his nearest BJP rival Basavaraj Patil Sedam by over 69,800 votes. Vijaya Basavaneppa Sankeshwar of the BJP defeated Veeranna A Mathikatti of the Congress in Dharwar North. In Dharwad South, I G Sanadi of the Congress defeated B M Mensinkai of the JD-U by 39,198 votes. In Mandya, film star Ambareesh was leading by 34,000 votes over his nearest Janata Dal (Secular) rival Krishna. In Belgaum Union Rural Development Minister Babagouda Patil lost to Amarsinh Patil of the Congress. UNI
