53 per cent polling in UPThe curtain finally rung down on polling in Uttar Pradesh today with the conclusion of the final round in 31 Lok Sabha constituencies with about 53 per cent of the 37 million voters casting their votes.Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee (Lucknow) and the Congress president Sonia Gandhi (Amethi) were among the 462 candidates whose electoral fate was sealed in ballot boxes in this phase. The 15,5,241 voters of Lucknow did not show much enthusiasm and the voters turnout never picked up in the day. The total percentage in Lucknow was 51 per cent, well below what was expected. Amethi, another VVIP constituency, however, saw a better turnout and 55 per cent of the voters cast their ballot. A report from Gorakhpur said despite the fact that it rained for four hours in the morning, the polling percentage was close to 50 per cent. The report said 52 per cent polling was recorded in Maharajganj while it was 52 percent in Deoria and 55 per cent in Kushinagar. According to a report from Rae Bareli, 55 to 60 per cent polling was recorded in Rae Bareli constituency from where former union ministers Arun Nehru and Capt Satish Sharma are the candidates. A report from Jaunpur quoting District Magistrate Leena Nandan said about 55 per cent polling was recorded in Jaunpur constituency. Polling in the hyper-sensitive constituency of Ballia, where former prime minister Chandrashekhar is a candidate, was by and large peaceful with 50 to 52 per cent voters exercising their franchise. Minor incidents of altercations were reported from Katharia, Saharaspali, Kaitholi and Suryapura but no major incident took place in Ballia. UNI
