India's 21 best cities for business, Bangalore tops

India’s Silicon Valley, Bangalore tops the list of best business destinations in India ranked on the basis of socio-economic and infrastructure factors, according to a study by Global Initiative for Restructuring Environment and Management (GIREM).

Maharashtra leads with three of its cities listed among the 21 business hotspots.

Bangalore

Score: 129.56

Bangalore scores in terms of schools and colleges, ability to attract infrastructure, office space availability and city culture while it lags on parameters like energy, housing, traffic, malls and multiplexes and getaways.

GIREM recommends that the city should improve civic services and mobility needs to make the city more attractive.

According to GIREM, eco-socio-economic-infrastructure includes well defined economic activity zones,  sufficient water resources, excellent telecommunication network, uninterrupted power supply, availability of talented people, wide range of mobility services, housing closer to work place, better work life balance, good educational institutions, accessible health centres and facilities for hotels, leisure, and shopping.

Chennai

A major industrial and economic hub in South India, Chennai tops in environment, health & safety, healthcare, human capital and getaways. 

It lags behind in energy, housing needs. GIREM says Chennai has to develop high speed road, rail connectivity and improve the quality of public transport. It also needs to make its factories environment friendly.

Mumbai

India’s financial capital Mumbai scores on good human capital, energy supply and mobility services, water supply, schools & colleges, health care service and ability to attract talent.
The city also has good number of malls, multiplexes and getaways.

However, Mumbai needs to make satellite integrated township to make space for offices and housing.

The city lags on parameters of environment, health and safety, climate, office space availability and infrastructure.

The study recommends relocation of slums and training of unskilled labour force.

Pune is the second city from Maharashtra to be featured in this list.

With several IT companies & automotive companies, Pune has established itself as a business hotspot.

GIREM says the city ranks high on human capital, energy, water, environment, health and safety, schools and colleges, ability to attract talent, climate, office pace availability, city culture and getaways.

The city needs to focus on improving mobility, housing and healthcare services.

The largest city in Gujarat, Ahmedabad ranks high on energy/power and water supply mobility services and health care services.

Other attractions are environment, health and safety aspects. The city needs to improve on aspects like availability of human capital, housing & office space.

GIREM says Ahmedabad should focus on creating an IT corridor to attract high end services to the city. The city also needs to build a cosmopolitan environment.

The city finds it difficult to retain talent. Calicut has a huge potential to be a BPO hub, it should improve office space availability and improve air connectivity to other destinations, says GIREM study.
